When Ohioans passed Issue 2 by a 64% margin to create the Ohio Livestock Care Board in November 2009, they did a great thing for the state, farmers, agribusiness owners and food safety experts among many others.
The legislation allowed for the creation of a 13-person Ohio Livestock Standards Care Board to address animal welfare standards. The Board will be responsible for poultry and livestock standards and will focus on safety, affordability and availablity of food. Also included in their focus will be best farm management practices for the well-being of animals. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) did not support creation of the livestock board.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture Director, Robert Boggs, serves on the board along with many others that were appointed by the Governor. The appointed members represent the following areas:
- Veterinary
- Family dairy farm
- Professor for Food and Animal Health
- Cattle farm
- Corn farm
- Department of Agriculture employee
- Ohio Farm Bureau
- Ohio Dairy Producers
- Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Ohio is leading the way by setting standards for care and several other states are considering similar legislation.
